Dementia

Dementia is an overall term for a group of symptoms affecting primarily memory loss, thinking and difficulties to function in everyday life. The two major degenerative causes of dementia are Alzheimer’s disease (a progressive loss of nerve cells without known cause) and vascular dementia (loss of brain functions due to a series of small strokes).

Symptoms

  • Memory loss
  • Declined brain processing speed
  • Reduced mental quickness
  • Language problems
  • Reduced understanding
  • Poorer judgement
  • Mood swings
  • Involuntary movements
  • Difficulties carrying out daily activities
  • Apathia

HOW TO SECURE A GOOD SEATING SOLUTION

For a dementia user, you should e.g. consider:

  • Intuitive functions due to the reduction of mental ability.
  • Dynamic components might comfort users with involuntary movements, e.g. the Netti Dynamic foot support will allow the repetitive movement of the legs.
  • Hip belt or harness could be important to prevent an injury for a person suffering from extreme dementia. With a harness adapter you can position the belt in the correct angle thus giving correct support and avoiding pressure directly on the shoulder.
  • Small main wheels can prevent the users from driving on their own without supervision.
  • Drum brake operated at the back will secure the wheelchair on spot.
