Pressure injury prevention

Once a decubitus ulcer has ­developed, wheelchair users can face painful treatments, months of bed rest, and hospitalisation. Netti ­Precision™ offers an effective pressure redistribution strategy, which is key to prevention of pressure ulcers.

To avoid pressure ulcers, there are several elements that must be considered. Pressure must be minimised and distributed over as large a surface as possible – and directed to where the body is best protected.

Pressure mapping has shown that Netti Precision™ surpasses other pressure preventive cushions when it comes to peak pressure.

The pressure measurements also show that Netti Precision effectively removes pressure from high-risk areas such as the coccyx and sit bones.

The tests shown here were performed by Netti at setting 115 mmHg. The tested cushions are #1 fluid seat cushion marketed as a “Skin Protection” cushion. Cushion #2 is a high-end density contoured seat cushion marketed as being suitable for wheelchairs users with pressure injury stage I and II, and then also our Netti Precision 1 seat cushion.

Microclimate control

Temperature control
The microclimate is affected by temperature and humidity and must be kept stable and at the right level. In this way we can ensure that the skin does not become moist and warm and thus more vulnerable. The combination of a hot, moist surface with high friction can increase risk of pressure injury. Humidity higher than 60% is seen as damageable to the skin.

The Netti Precision™ material maintain a low temperature and thus lower risk of injury. According to the test institute at the University of Pittsburgh, the temperature at the interface ­between the user and Netti Precision™ material is only 32,7°C after 3 hours. Comparable cushions measure between 33,7°C and 35,7°C.

Humidity control
Humidity above 60% can increase skin vulnerability and cause friction between the skin and textiles, which potentially can lead to pressure injury. This is why we aim to keep the humidity low. The tests from the University of Pittsburgh show that the cushion with Netti Precision™ material has a ­humidity level of 62% after 3 hours compared to an average of 81,2% for the 14 com­parable­ cushions.

Seat cushions based on Ergomise™ Technology offer the lowest humidity at user interface, which helps protect the skin and lower the risk of pressure injuries. Netti Precision outperforms competitors as seen in the test from the University of Pittsburgh comparing Netti Precision to 14 competitor seat cushions.

Evidence Based Design
The design of the Netti Precision seat cushions are based on numerous tests and is thus evidence based. The University of Pittsburg as well as Netti have performed multiple tests.
